GOECHA LA TREK

Goecha La Trek is one of the most challenging and rewarding treks in Sikkim that takes you to the base camp of Mount Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. The trek starts from Yuksom, the first capital of Sikkim, and passes through dense forests, alpine meadows, rhododendron gardens and glacial moraines. The trek offers stunning views of 14 other big summits, including Pandim, Kabru, Rathong and Talung. The highlight of the trek is the sunrise view of Kanchenjunga from Goecha La pass (4940 m), a sight that will leave you spellbound. The trek takes about 12-14 days and is best done from April to June or September to November.

  • After reaching Bagdogra Airport / NJP Railway Station, you will be picked up and transferred to Gangtok.
  • Enjoy the scenic drive along the river Teesta and Rangit, with a beautiful view of mountains, rivers, forests, and beautiful villages.
  • Once you arrive in Gangtok, check-in at the hotel and relax or explore the popular M.G Marg on your own.
  • Spend the night at Gangtok.
  • After having breakfast, you will explore the attractions of Gangtok in a full day tour.

  • Banjhakri Falls:  a scenic waterfall surrounded by a park with ethnic sculptures and a cultural center.
  • Bakthang Waterfall:  a cascading waterfall that offers a refreshing view and a photo opportunity.
  • Tashi View Point: a vantage point that offers a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga range and the Gangtok city.
  • Gonjang Monasterya Buddhist monastery that follows the Nyingma sect and has a serene ambiance and a library.
  • Ganesh Toka temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh that is located on a hilltop and offers a bird’s eye view of Gangtok.
  • Hanuman Tokhilltop temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman that is also a popular viewpoint and a pilgrimage site.
  • Flower Exhibition Centrea place where you can admire the variety and beauty of the local flowers and orchids.
  • Ropewaya cable car ride that takes you from Deorali to Tashiling, giving you an aerial view of Gangtok and the valley.
  • Namgyal Institute of Tibetologya museum and research center that showcases the history, culture and art of Tibet and Buddhism.
  • Do Drul Chorten Stupaa large white stupa that is one of the most important religious sites in Sikkim.
  • Overnight stay at Gangtok after wonderful tour.
  • After having breakfast start journey from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, and head towards Yuksom, a historical town that was the first capital of Sikkim.
  • On the way, visit Bon monastery and Tashiding monastery, two of the oldest and most sacred monasteries in Sikkim. You will learn about the history and the beliefs of the Bon and the Buddhist traditions, and admire the architecture and the art of these monasteries.
  • Enjoy a drive through a winding Himalayan road, that passes through terraced farm land, forest, streams and rivulets, and hanging bridge. You will see the beauty and the diversity of the nature and the people of Sikkim.
  • Arrive at Yuksom, a valley surrounded by hills covered with forest. You will feel the peace and the charm of this place, which is also the gateway to many treks in the region.
  • Overnight stay at Yuksom.
  • After breakfast, start from Yuksom, a historical town that was the first capital of Sikkim, and head towards Bakhim, a small village that is a popular stopover for trekkers.
  • Trek for about 12 km (6 hours) through an undulating climb that passes through forests, meadows and streams. You will see the beauty and the diversity of the flora and fauna of Sikkim, especially the rhododendrons that bloom in different colors.
  • Cross the Perekchu Bridge, a wooden bridge that spans over a gushing river. You will feel the thrill and the excitement of crossing this bridge, which is also a great spot for photography.
  • Reach Bakhim, a village that is situated at an altitude of 2,743 meters. You will have gained 1,003 meters in altitude from Yuksom, so you will need to acclimatize yourself to the thin air and the cold weather. You will camp at Bakhim, where you can enjoy the views of the mountains and the stars.
  • Start from Bakhim, a small village that is a popular stopover for trekkers, and head towards Tshoka, another village that is the last settlement before the high altitude zone.
  • Trek for about 2 km (1 hour) through a gradual climb that passes through forests and fields. You will see the beauty and the simplicity of the rural life of Sikkim, as well as the variety of the crops and the flowers that grow in this region.
  • Reach Tshoka, a village that is situated at an altitude of 3,048 meters. You will have gained 305 meters in altitude from Bakhim, so you will need to acclimatize yourself to the thin air and the cold weather. You will also get a view of Mount Pandim and other smaller peaks, which will fill you with awe and wonder.
  • Spend some time to explore Tshoka, where you can visit the Buddhist monastery, the local shops and the houses. You will learn about the history and the culture of the people who live in this remote and beautiful place.
  • Start from Tshoka, a village that is the last settlement before the high altitude zone, and head towards Dzongri, a meadow that is a popular viewpoint for trekkers.
  • Trek for about 10 km (5-6 hours) through a steep climb that passes through rhododendron forests, alpine meadows and streams. You will see the beauty and the diversity of the flora and fauna of Sikkim, especially the rhododendrons that bloom in different colors.
  • Reach Dzongri, a meadow that is situated at an altitude of 4,200 meters. You will have gained about 1,000 meters in altitude from Tshoka, so you will need to acclimatize yourself to the thin air and the cold weather12. You will also get a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga range, including peaks like Pandim, Kabru, Rathong and Kokthang.
  • Camp at Dzongri, where you can enjoy the comfort and the warmth of your tents and sleeping bags. You will also have a chance to interact with other trekkers and share your experiences.
  • Start from Dzongri, a meadow that is a popular viewpoint for trekkers, and head towards Dzongrila, a pass that is located at an altitude of 4,380 meters
  • Trek for about 10 km (8 hours) through a steep and challenging climb that passes through rhododendron forests, alpine meadows and rocky terrain. You will need to have good stamina and endurance for this trek, as well as proper acclimatization.
  • Reach Dzongrila, a pass that offers panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga range, including peaks like Pandim, Kabru, Rathong and Kokthang. You will also see the Rathong glacier and the Chaurikhang base camp of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute.
  • Spend some time to admire the views and take photos from Dzongrila pass, where you can see the sunrise and the sunset over the mountains. You will feel the thrill and the wonder of being close to the third highest mountain in the world.
  • Return to Dzongri, where you can rest and recover from the strenuous trek. You will also have a chance to interact with other trekkers and share your experiences.
  • Start from Dzongri, a meadow that is a popular viewpoint for trekkers, and head towards Thangsing, a valley that is located at an altitude of 3,639 meters.
  • Trek for about 6 km (4 hours) through a dune type of climb and then descend through dense rhododendron bushes. You will see the beauty and the diversity of the flora and fauna of Sikkim, especially the rhododendrons that bloom in different colors.
  • Cross the Perek River and then climb a little through silver fir forest to reach Thangsing. You will see the mountain peaks overlooking the Thangsing valley, which is a serene and picturesque place to camp.
  • Wake up early in the morning and hike to Thangsing Deorali Dara, a viewpoint that offers a stunning view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and its surrounding peaks. You will feel the awe and the wonder of being close to the third highest mountain in the world.
  • Return to Thangsing, where you can relax and enjoy the views of the valley and the mountains. 
  • Start from Thangsing, a valley that is located below the slopes of Mt. Pandim, and head towards Samiti Lake, a glacial lake that is considered holy by the locals.
  • Trek for about 7 km (3-4 hours) through a gradual climb that passes through alpine meadows, streams and boulders. You will see the beauty and the simplicity of the nature and the people of Sikkim, as well as the variety of the wildflowers and the birds that thrive in this region.
  • Reach Samiti Lake, a lake that is situated at an altitude of 4,200 meters. You will see the reflection of Mt. Kanchenjunga and its surrounding peaks in the emerald-blue waters of the lake. You will also feel the peace and the charm of this place, which is also the base camp for the Goecha La trek.
  • Spend some time to admire the views and take photos from Samiti Lake, where you can see the sunrise and the sunset over the mountains. You will feel the awe and the wonder of being close to the third highest mountain in the world.
  • Camp at Samiti Lake is not allowed, so camp for overnight stay is done at Lamuni 10 minutes’ walk away from Samiti Lake.
  • Start from Lamune, a campsite that is located near Samiti Lake, and head towards Goecha La, a pass that is the closest point to Mt. Kanchenjunga from this trek.
  • Trek for about 13 km (7 hours) through barren land, moraines and glaciers. You will need to have good stamina and endurance for this trek, as well as proper acclimatization and warm clothing. You will also hear the sound of icefall that gives an extraordinary thrill.
  • Reach Goechala, a pass that is situated at an altitude of 4,940 meters. You will have an amazing view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and its surrounding peaks, as well as the Talung glacier and the Zemu Gap. You will also see the prayer flags and the cairns that mark the pass.

  • Trek for about 10 km (4-5 hours) through a gradual descent that passes through alpine meadows, streams and boulders. You will see the beauty and the simplicity of the nature and the people of Sikkim, as well as the variety of the wildflowers and the birds that thrive in this region.
  • Cross the Perek River and then climb a little through silver fir forest to reach Tshoka. You will see the mountain peaks overlooking the Tshoka valley, which is a serene and picturesque place to camp.
  • Spend some time to explore Tshoka, where you can visit the Buddhist monastery, the local shops and the houses. You will learn about the history and the culture of the people who live in this remote and beautiful place.

  • Cross the Perek River and then follow the right bank of the Ratong Chu River to reach Yuksom. You will see the beauty and the simplicity of the rural life of Sikkim, as well as the variety of the crops and the flowers that grow in this region.
  • Spend some time to explore Yuksom, where you can visit the Coronation Throne, where the first king of Sikkim was crowned, the Dubdi monastery, the oldest monastery in Sikkim, and the bazaar, where you can buy souvenirs and local products.
  • Overnight stay at Yuksom after wonderful trekking.
  • Have breakfast and checkout from the hotel.
  • Board the transfer vehicle to Bagdogra Airport / NJP Railway Station.
  • Travel to your next destination or return home.
