THOLUNG TREK

Tholung Trek is a moderate trek that takes you to the Tholung valley, a sacred and secluded place in North Sikkim. The trek starts from Lingza, a small village near Lachen, and ends at Tholung Gompa, one of the oldest and most revered monasteries in Sikkim. The trek passes through dense forests, bamboo groves, cardamom fields and pastures. The trek also lets you see some of the ancient and precious relics and scriptures that are stored in Tholung Gompa and other nearby monasteries, such as Lingthem Gompa and Lashar Gompa. The highlight of the trek is the serene and spiritual atmosphere of the Tholung valley, where you can feel the presence of the divine. The trek takes about 6-7 days and is best done from March to May or October to December.

  • After reaching Bagdogra Airport / NJP Railway Station, you will be picked up and transferred to Gangtok.
  • Enjoy the scenic drive along the river Teesta and Rangit, with a beautiful view of mountains, rivers, forests, and beautiful villages.
  • Once you arrive in Gangtok, check-in at the hotel and relax or explore the popular M.G Marg on your own.
  • Spend the night at Gangtok.
  • After having breakfast, you will explore the attractions of Gangtok in a full day tour.

  • Banjhakri Falls:  a scenic waterfall surrounded by a park with ethnic sculptures and a cultural center.
  • Bakthang Waterfall:  a cascading waterfall that offers a refreshing view and a photo opportunity.
  • Tashi View Point: a vantage point that offers a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga range and the Gangtok city.
  • Gonjang Monasterya Buddhist monastery that follows the Nyingma sect and has a serene ambiance and a library.
  • Ganesh Toka temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh that is located on a hilltop and offers a bird’s eye view of Gangtok.
  • Hanuman Tokhilltop temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman that is also a popular viewpoint and a pilgrimage site.
  • Flower Exhibition Centrea place where you can admire the variety and beauty of the local flowers and orchids.
  • Ropewaya cable car ride that takes you from Deorali to Tashiling, giving you an aerial view of Gangtok and the valley.
  • Namgyal Institute of Tibetologya museum and research center that showcases the history, culture and art of Tibet and Buddhism.
  • Do Drul Chorten Stupaa large white stupa that is one of the most important religious sites in Sikkim.
  • Overnight stay at Gangtok after wonderful tour.
  • The drive starts from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, after breakfast, and follows a road that curves and bends along the hills and valleys of Sikkim towards Lingza, a village in North Sikkim.
  • The drive takes about 6 hours to complete, and covers a distance of about 120 km.
  • The drive passes through some scenic spots, such as the Seven Sisters Waterfalls, the Naga Waterfalls and the Chungthang Valley, where you can stop and take some pictures or enjoy the view.
  • The drive also lets you visit some cultural and historical sites, such as the Phodong Monastery, one of the oldest and most important monasteries in Sikkim, and the Kabi Lunchok, a sacred place where the Lepcha and Bhutia tribes signed a treaty of brotherhood in the 13th century.
  • The drive ends at Lingza, where you can stay overnight at a camp, and experience the rural life and hospitality of the people.
  • The trek starts from Lingza, after breakfast and a briefing session by the tour instructor, who will guide you and assist you throughout the trek.
  • The trek follows a trail that ascends and descends along the Tholung river, crossing several bridges and streams, and passing through dense forests and meadows.
  • The trek takes about 6 hours to complete, and covers a distance of about 18 km.
  • The trek lets you enjoy the pristine and diverse nature of North Sikkim, where you can spot various birds and animals, such as pheasants, yaks, deer and bears.
  • The trek also lets you visit the Tholung Monastery, one of the oldest and most revered monasteries in Sikkim, which houses many ancient relics and manuscripts, and is only open to the public once every three years.
  • The trek ends at Changey, a small hamlet near the monastery, where you can have lunch and stay overnight in tents.
  • The excursion starts from Changey, after breakfast, and follows a short trail that leads to the Tholung Monastery, which is located in a valley surrounded by mountains and forests.
  • The excursion takes about 3 hours to complete, and covers a distance of about 6 km.
  • The excursion lets you visit the Tholung Monastery, one of the oldest and most revered monasteries in Sikkim, which was founded in the 18th century by Lama Lhatsun Chempo, one of the three lamas who brought Buddhism to Sikkim.
  • The excursion also lets you see some of the ancient relics and manuscripts that are stored in the monastery, such as statues, thangkas, weapons and musical instruments, which are believed to have miraculous powers and are only displayed once every three years.
  • The excursion also lets you visit the Sacred Rock and Devta Dhunga, two mysterious sites near the monastery, where you can see some carvings and inscriptions that are said to have been made by gods and spirits.
  • The excursion ends at Changey, where you will be guided back to the campsite.
  • The hike starts from Tholung, after breakfast, and follows a trail that climbs steeply from the Tholung Gompa, the monastery that you visited the previous day.
  • The hike takes about 6 hours to complete, and covers a distance of about 12 km.
  • The hike passes through rocky and narrow paths, crossing several streams and bridges, and passing through dense forests and grasslands.
  • The hike lets you enjoy the pristine and diverse nature of North Sikkim, where you can spot various birds and animals, such as eagles, vultures, yaks, deer and bears.
  • The hike also lets you visit Kishong, a small village near Upper Tholung, where you can see the traditional lifestyle and culture of the people, who belong to the Lepcha community.
  • The hike ends at Upper Tholung, where you can stay overnight in tents, and enjoy the panoramic view of the mountains and the valley.
  • The hike starts from Upper Tholung, after breakfast, and follows a trail that descends gradually from the high altitude to the lower valley.
  • The hike takes about 5 hours to complete, and covers a distance of about 12 km.
  • The hike passes through the same scenic spots that you saw on your way up, such as the streams, bridges, forests and grasslands, but with a different perspective and light.
  • The hike lets you enjoy the pristine and diverse nature of North Sikkim, where you can spot various birds and animals, such as eagles, vultures, yaks, deer and bears.
  • The hike also lets you visit Kishong again, where you can interact with the local people and learn more about their culture and traditions.
  • The hike ends at Changey, where you can stay overnight in tents, and relax after your trek.
  • The hike starts from Changey, after breakfast, and follows a trail that ascends and descends along the Tholung river, crossing several bridges and streams, and passing through dense forests and meadows.
  • The hike takes about 5 hours to complete, and covers a distance of about 18 km.
  • The hike passes through the same scenic spots that you saw on your way up, such as the Tholung Gompa, the monastery that you visited on the second day of your trek, and the waterfalls and valleys along the way.
  • The hike lets you enjoy the pristine and diverse nature of North Sikkim, where you can spot various birds and animals, such as pheasants, yaks, deer and bears.
  • From Lingza you will be taken further to Singhik. 
  • Upon arrival in Singhik, you will be guided to guesthouse where you can relax and enjoy the memorable journey that you accomplished.
  • Have breakfast and heads towards Gangtok.
  • Upon arrival in Gangtok, check-in to the hotel. 
  • Stay overnight at Gangtok.
